Copilot works because it lives inside the apps you already use — Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook. No separate tab. No copy-paste. It's just there in the sidebar.

The biggest unlock for me is Teams meeting integration. Our conference rooms auto-record, transcribe, and summarize every meeting. Action items and key decisions land before I've walked back to my desk.

Beyond meetings, I lean on it to summarize long PDFs, contracts, and reports. The free Copilot on Windows can't touch this — the value isn't the chat, it's the Microsoft 365 ecosystem layer.

Bonus: my work AI stays at work. Everything runs inside my company's environment, so I'm not worrying about work data ending up somewhere it shouldn't.

Google AI Pro

Mostly paying for storage — keeping the AI as a bonus.

Honest answer: I'm largely paying for the 5 TB of Google storage. Six people in my family, every photo and video backed up, all on one plan.

On the AI side, the biggest thing for me is image and video generation. Free tier gets ~2–3 Imagen Pro images a day. Pro unlocks up to 100/day plus video creation tools that are otherwise behind the paywall.

Deep Research is genuinely good — real research without me babysitting 12 browser tabs. NotebookLM is excellent too: upload your own docs, have a conversation with them.

Gemini is now baked into Gmail, Calendar, and Drive. My plan is to eventually hand off calendar management and email triage. Pro also includes YouTube Premium Lite, which can replace a separate YouTube subscription for a single person.

Claude Pro

Already paid for itself for the next four years.

I built an outreach system for a school golf tournament raising money for a cheerleading program. The system contacted nearly 100 local businesses asking for donations, sponsorships, and prizes.

The tournament brought in over $20,000 in donations and sponsorships. My daughter's cheer account received more than a thousand dollars directly from it. That one project covered years of my Claude subscription — and that's one use case.

Day to day I live in Claude Code. I'm building custom tools and dashboards for my YouTube workflow, automating how I work, scraping sites, organizing files, and updating my WordPress sites.

The under-discussed part: Claude lets me build things I never would have built otherwise. I wouldn't have hired a programmer for most of these — I just would have gone without.

Fast to ship. Worth re-evaluating alongside Claude.

I've been a Lovable user for over a year and a half. Built with it: a cattle-embryo sales site, my personal chadesheppard.com, a fundraising site for my daughter's cheer program, and CheerHub (cheerhub.pro) — a full cheer management app still in progress.

I've absolutely gotten my money's worth, including affiliate sales from genuine use since the early days.

Honest concern: as I do more with Claude, the overlap is real. There's also a sameness problem — a lot of Lovable sites start to look alike. Speed is great. Long term, that can feel limiting.

Lovable wins on speed and ease — non-technical, fast to live. Claude wins on flexibility and power if you're willing to learn a bit more and handle hosting yourself.

The simple filter I apply to every AI subscription:

If it saves you one hour a month, the cost is justified.

For most people, one hour of time is worth more than $20. The math usually answers itself.

If you're not hitting free-tier limits, that's your answer.

Most free models today are better than paid models were 12 months ago. If free works for you, you're not behind. You're fine.

When free is enough

Drafting emails, brainstorming, summarizing articles, fixing grammar, general conversation. The free versions handle all of that — fast and capable. Don't pay yet.

When paying makes sense

When you're hitting limits. When you're building things. When you're generating income or saving meaningful work hours. When the output has a dollar value you can point to.

What about local AI? Open-source models you run on your own machine are getting more accessible — no subscription, no limits, no data leaving your computer. The catch is setup still requires some technical confidence. But this is where things are heading.
