Free Wispr Flow Alternative — Windows & Mac
The free Wispr Flow alternative with no word limits.
Wispr Flow's free plan caps you at 2,000 words a week. Fluid Voice is the open-source Wispr Flow alternative that's genuinely free, has no word limits — and your audio never leaves your computer. It even has a Windows build almost nobody knows about.

Real tests: Fluid Voice vs. Wispr Flow.
Same mic, three tests — clean sentences, technical terms, and messy real speech. Plus exactly where the hidden Windows installer lives.
The Part Everyone Misses
The Windows download is buried. Here's where it is.
Fluid Voice is a Mac-first project. On the repo's front page, the download button hands you the Mac version — the Windows build is tagged separately as a pre-release, so it never shows up as "latest."
- 1Go to the Fluid Voice releases page on GitHub.
- 2Scroll past all the Mac 1.6 builds until you hit the tag Windows-v0.0.9 — that's the installer.
- 3Download and run it. Expect a blue Windows warning screen — it's not a virus, the app just isn't commercially code signed. The code is public with 11,000+ GitHub stars. Your call to make.
- 4Install with the Parakeet v2 model (~900 MB) if you only need English, then test your mic and set a global hotkey.
- 5Optional but recommended: download the Fluid One enhanced AI model (~3 GB). It cleans up punctuation, capitalization, and formats on request — say "new paragraph" or "make a list" and it just does it.
Same Mic, Three Tests
How Fluid Voice held up against Wispr Flow.
Test 01
Clean sentences
Fluid Voice
Nailed it. Only an exclamation mark instead of a period.
Wispr Flow
Also nailed it, and processed slightly faster.
Result: Tie (Wispr a touch faster)
Test 02
Technical terms
Fluid Voice
Struggled with "Claude Code" (heard "clock code") until I added it to the custom dictionary — then it was perfect.
Wispr Flow
Got "Vercel" wrong as "Vercal" on the first pass, right on the second.
Result: Tie (both need a little training)
Test 03
Messy real speech
Fluid Voice
Handled filler words, false starts, and mid-sentence mind changes almost perfectly.
Wispr Flow
Cleaned up the same messy speech perfectly.
Result: Tie
Bottom line: both are reliable and trainable. Wispr Flow was a hair faster in my tests, but keep in mind Fluid Voice is only as good as your computer — it runs locally, so a stronger PC means a stronger experience.
Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper vs Fluid Voice
How the three dictation apps stack up.
If you're shopping for a Wispr Flow alternative, Superwhisper is the other name that comes up. Here's the honest comparison.
| Fluid Voice | Wispr Flow | Superwhisper | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free tier | Unlimited, forever | 2,000 words/week | ~2,000 words/month |
| Windows support | Yes (hidden pre-release) | Yes | Mac-first (limited Windows) |
| Runs locally | Yes — audio never leaves your PC | No (cloud processing) | Yes |
| iPhone app | Coming soon (iOS in development per repo) | Yes, with sync | Yes |
| Cost to go unlimited | $0 | ~$15/month | ~$10/month |
My take: Superwhisper is polished, but its free tier is even tighter than Wispr Flow's. If you're on Windows — or just tired of word caps — Fluid Voice is the only option that's unlimited and free on day one.
What Else Is In There
Way more than just dictation.
- Multiple voice engines to choose from
- Downloadable full history — text and audio — of everything you've dictated
- Stats dashboard: time saved, words per day, all-time totals
- Streaks and personal-best records (yes, it's gamified)
- Shows which apps you dictate in the most
- 20+ settings to tune
What I use it for most: dictating long, detailed prompts into Claude Code. Press the hotkey, talk, and the text lands wherever your cursor is — in any app on your computer.
The Verdict
Who should switch?
Hitting the free cap?
Dictate on your phone?
Privacy-sensitive work?
Common questions.
Is Fluid Voice really free?
Yes. It's open source (GPL v3) with no word limits, no subscription, and no account. The speech-to-text runs entirely on your own computer.
Where is the Fluid Voice Windows download?
The main download button on the GitHub repo hands you the Mac version. The Windows build is tagged separately as a pre-release — go to the Releases page and scroll past the Mac builds until you find the tag Windows-v0.0.9.
Is the Windows security warning a virus?
No. The blue Windows warning appears because the app isn't commercially code signed. The code is fully public on GitHub with over 11,000 stars. Whether to install is your call — I'm just showing you what you'll see.
Does Fluid Voice work on iPhone?
Not yet — but iOS is listed as coming soon on the Fluid Voice repo. For now, Wispr Flow has the iPhone app with sync. If mobile dictation matters today, Wispr Flow's free tier still gives you 1,000 words on mobile.
Is there a free Wispr Flow alternative for Windows?
Yes — Fluid Voice. It's free, open source, and unlimited, with a Windows build hidden in the GitHub releases under the Windows-v0.0.9 tag. Superwhisper is another popular option but its free tier is also limited and it's Mac-first.
How does Fluid Voice compare to Superwhisper?
Both run locally on your machine. Superwhisper is more polished but Mac-only for the full experience and its free tier caps you at roughly 2,000 words a month. Fluid Voice is unlimited and free on both Windows and Mac, though the Windows build is newer and rougher around the edges.
Will Fluid Voice run on a Snapdragon PC?
My understanding is no — the Windows build won't work on newer Snapdragon-powered computers. Regular Intel/AMD PCs are fine.
Fluid Voice vs Wispr Flow — which should I use?
If you're hitting Wispr Flow's 2,000-words-a-week free cap, switch to Fluid Voice — unlimited and free wins. If you dictate on your phone or want zero setup, Wispr Flow's paid plan is worth the money. If privacy matters (client work, NDAs), Fluid Voice's local processing is the safest option.
