Claude Desktop App Guide

Stop using Claude in a browser tab.

The Claude Desktop App is free, faster to open, and connects to the apps you actually use — Gmail, Drive, GitHub, Notion. Here's the 10-minute setup that turns it into the fastest AI you own.

    Why bother

The browser version has a friction problem.

Every time you switch tabs, you lose momentum. The desktop app fixes that — one shortcut, from anywhere, and Claude is in front of you already looking at whatever you were working on.

    Claude in the browser

    What you're stuck with

    • New tab, sign in, wait for the page
    • No global keyboard shortcut
    • Can't see your files or apps

    What you gain

    • One shortcut — Claude opens anywhere
    • Attach files from Finder / Explorer instantly
    • Connect MCP tools (Gmail, Drive, GitHub, your own)

    One-Time Setup

    Four steps. Ten minutes.

You don't need Claude Pro or a paid plan to install the app. If you already have a Claude account, you're ready.

    Step 01

    Download the Claude Desktop App

Grab the official installer from Anthropic. It works on macOS and Windows. Free with any Claude account — you don't need Pro to start.

    Step 02

Sign in and set your shortcut

Open the app, sign in with the same account you use in the browser, and set a global hotkey (I use Cmd+Shift+Space on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+Space on Windows).

Settings → Keyboard shortcut → Toggle Claude

    Step 03

    Turn on Connectors (MCP)

Connectors let Claude talk to your other apps — Gmail, Google Drive, GitHub, Notion, and more. Turn on the ones you actually use. Skip the rest.

Settings → Connectors → Add connector

    Step 04

    Enable Projects and Memory

Point the desktop app at your existing Projects and turn on Memory so it remembers you between chats. Full walkthroughs linked below.

Settings → Profile → Memory: On

    Daily Use

    What the day-to-day looks like.

    1. 1Hit your shortcut — Claude pops up over whatever you're doing
    2. 2Drop in a file, paste a screenshot, or start typing
    3. 3Ask Claude to pull from a connector (Gmail, Drive, GitHub, etc.)
    4. 4Dismiss with the same shortcut — no tab clutter

Once the shortcut is muscle memory, you won't open the browser version again.

    What you get

Everything the browser has — and then some.

    • Global keyboard shortcut
    • Drag-and-drop file attachments
    • MCP Connectors (Gmail, Drive, GitHub, Notion)
    • Projects sync with browser
    • Memory across chats
    • Voice input
    • Screenshot / screen capture attach
    • Dark mode + system theme
